Pet insurance FAQ

Everything pet parents ask us about coverage, costs, claims, and the telehealth member discount — in plain English.

For a healthy young pet, accident-and-illness coverage typically starts around $19–$25/mo for cats and $35–$50/mo for dogs, though your exact price depends on species, breed, age, ZIP code, and the deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit you choose. Our Essential plan starts from $19/mo and Signature from $69/mo. The fastest way to know your real number is a free 2-minute quote.

Pawllicy is a licensed, independent insurance agency — a producer, not an underwriter. We don't issue policies ourselves; we compare top-rated carriers and place you with the best fit, then stay on your side for claims and renewals. That independence means we recommend what's right for your pet, not what's right for one carrier.

The plans we place cover accidents and injuries, illnesses (from ear infections to cancer and diabetes), emergency and specialist care, surgery, hospitalization, and diagnostics like bloodwork and MRIs. Higher tiers add hereditary and congenital conditions, chronic care, behavioral therapy, alternative and rehab therapies, prescription meds, dental illness, and even routine wellness care on our Signature plan.

It's a premium rating factor of up to 10%, applied by the insurer, for members who add our partner telehealth vet service. Virtual triage resolves many non-emergency concerns without a costly clinic visit, which lowers claims risk — so the carrier can price the policy lower. To qualify, enroll in any plan, activate the telehealth benefit, and stay an active member. The discount scales with your plan tier and is available where the carrier has filed it.

Pet insurance is reimbursement-based. You pay your vet at checkout, then submit the itemized invoice. Your carrier pays you back a percentage — 70%, 80%, or 90% depending on your plan — after your deductible is met, up to your annual limit. For example, on the Complete plan a $2,000 covered bill with the deductible already met reimburses $1,600, leaving you $400 out of pocket.

A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket each policy year before reimbursement kicks in. Ours range from $100 to $500. A higher deductible lowers your monthly premium; a lower deductible costs a bit more monthly but pays back sooner. We'll show you the trade-offs live in your quote so you can pick what fits your budget.

No — pre-existing conditions (anything your pet showed signs of before coverage started or during the waiting period) are excluded across the industry. That's exactly why enrolling early matters. The good news: some carriers will cover a curable pre-existing condition once your pet has been symptom- and treatment-free for a set period, often 180 days. We'll flag which carriers do that.

It varies by carrier. Accident coverage often begins within a few days (sometimes next-day), and illness coverage usually starts after about 14 days. Certain orthopedic conditions, like cruciate ligaments, can have a longer waiting period. We'll give you the exact start dates for the plan you choose before you enroll — no ambiguity.

Yes. Every plan we place lets you visit any licensed veterinarian in the U.S., including emergency hospitals and specialists. There are no networks and no referrals required — you choose the vet, we help you get reimbursed.

Core accident-and-illness plans focus on the unexpected, not routine care. If you want coverage for exams, vaccines, and dental cleanings, our Signature plan folds routine and wellness care in, and some carriers offer a wellness add-on you can attach to a base plan. We'll show you both options in your quote.

Most carriers insure pets of all ages, though some cap the enrollment age for new policies and premiums are higher for older pets. Yes — like most insurance, premiums generally rise as your pet ages and vet costs climb. Enrolling while your pet is young locks in coverage before conditions become pre-existing and keeps your starting price lower.

Most claims are submitted in under five minutes with a photo of your itemized invoice, and carriers typically process them within days to a couple of weeks. Signature-plan members get priority claims handling. If a claim is ever confusing, you call us — a real, licensed human — not a call-center maze.

Yes. There are no long-term contracts. You can cancel your policy at any time, and most carriers offer a money-back review period after enrollment. If your needs change, we'll also re-shop your coverage rather than let you overpay.

Dental illness — like extractions and periodontal disease treatment — is covered on select plans, and our Signature plan also includes routine dental cleanings under its wellness benefit. Purely cosmetic dental work is excluded. We'll show you exactly what your chosen carrier includes.

Yes on eligible plans. Cancer treatment, hereditary and congenital conditions (like hip dysplasia and heart defects), and emergency and specialist care are all covered on our Complete and Signature plans, as long as they aren't pre-existing. These are exactly the high-cost events insurance exists to protect you from.

Yes — you can cover as many pets as you have, each on the plan that fits them best. Many of the carriers we work with offer a multi-pet discount when you insure more than one. Tell us about your whole crew in the quote and we'll apply every discount you qualify for, including the Telehealth Member Discount.

We're currently licensed in Florida, Virginia, and New York, and we're expanding. If you enter a ZIP outside those states, we'll let you know and offer to notify you the moment we launch near you — no dead ends.

If a surprise $4,000 emergency would strain your savings, it usually is. About one in three pets needs unexpected vet care each year, and a single emergency surgery can run $1,500–$5,000+. Insurance turns that into a manageable copay so care is a decision about your pet, not your bank balance — and the Telehealth Member Discount makes it more affordable still.
